2nd Step--Daily Obedience of the 10 Commandments &
Maintaining Chastity/Celibacy
It is crucial that when one follows and commits themselves to the Catholic faith, it is also important that they obey the 10 Commandments daily as well. It is not enough that a person have a conversion experience, although this is certainly important. It is also crucial that the person makes the determination that they will not allow mortal sin into their lives ever again. A full commitment to God and decision to attain heavenly salvation for the soul from that point on is required. Although sin entered the world through Adam and Eve and is certainly part of human nature, it is certainly not impossible to strive for perfection as Our Lord Jesus says "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect." In fact, Jesus is somewhat giving us an order when He says that we must be perfect as God is perfect. Obedience to the 10 Commandments is the most important step to attaining salvation because it is God himself that has commanded it.
Since no one with mortal sins on their souls will be allowed into the Heavenly kingdom, those who wish to see God and Our Lord Jesus cannot afford to have the slightest mortal sin on their souls. Even one mortal sin on one's soul at the end of life can cause a person to be lost to Hell. Therefore, it is imperative that we read the Catechism of the Catholic faith to know what each commandment means because each commandment has other sins attached to it such as the 6th commandment, "Thou shalt not commit adultery" which forbids looking at anyone lustfully even single people. It is highly advised that Catholics learn the 10 Commandments and read about each one on the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
The Commandments are a guide to what we should avoid at all costs and if one should break any of these laws, they have committed a mortal sin which is considered a grave offense toward God Himself and an offense against their own souls. When one dies, whoever is in grave sin will suffer condemnation by God and will be thrown into Hell since they have permanently separated themselves from God in life and spiritually. The only way to remove mortal sins is by the Sacrament of Penance which is confession and absolution by a Catholic priest.
The 10 Commandments are:
1. I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have strange gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God's name in vain.
3. Remember to keep the Sabbath holy.
4. Honor thy Father and thy Mother.
5. Thou shall not kill.
6. Thou shall not commit adultery.
7. Thou shalt not steal.
8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods.
Chastity/celibacy is a necessary part of saving one's soul as a single Catholic. According to the Catholic Church's teachings, single Catholics should not be engaging in premarital sex but "it shows the disciple how to follow and imitate Him who has chosen us as His friends, who has give Himself totally to us and allows us to participate in His divine estate. Chastity is a promise of immortality. Chastity is expressed notably in friendship with one's neighbor. The Christian has 'put on Christ,' the model for all chastity. All Christ's faithful are called to lead a chaste life in keeping with their particular states of life. At the moment of his Baptism, the Christian is pledged to lead his affective life in chastity.
Some profess virginity or consecrated celibacy which enables them to give themselves to God alone with an undivided heart in a remarkable manner. Those who are engaged to marry are called to live chastity in continence. They should see in this time of testing a discovery of mutual respect, an apprenticeship in fidelity, and the hope of receiving one another from God. They should reserve for marriage the expressions of affection that belong to married love. They will help each other grow in chastity. Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of married spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young." It is also a grave mortal sin and a rejection of the 6th commandment of God.
